About Driving Lessons

About Driving Lessons -

Do I need to have Driving Lessons?
In Victoria, there are currently no requirement to take any professional lessons to sit your drive test.

Why should I get Driving Lessons?
Driving Lessons can help for a number of reasons.

Many learners just need help preparing for their test or with Reverse Parallel parking & 3 point turns.
Some learners need some help to get started and gain confidence in driving before practicing with their parents/supervisors.
Driving Instructors are professional driver trainers and operate dual control vehicles so can basically operate the car form the p[assenger seat.

How many driving lessons should I have?
This really depends on the individuals abiltiy and reasons for lessons.

When a learner is just starting out they may require 1 - 5 (60min) lessons to gain the skill and confidence to drive with their supervisors.

A lesson mid-way through the learning journey can be helpful to brush up on skills, road knowledge and fix any bad habits!

Preparing for the Test can be a single lesson going over the essentials and becoming familiar driving around the test area, to a few more to gain confidence.

Manual or Automatic?
This really depends on the Learner, what car they may like to drive and what cars they have available to practice in.
With Manual driving, practice is sometimes the best/only way to improve and become confident and can be quite difficult just doing some lessons without practice in between.

Some families only have manual cars available so have no choice where some have none.
A good option for those that would like a a manual licence but aren't quite confident enough to take the test is to obtain an auto licence first then "upgrad
e' to a manual a bit later.

Where do we meet for lessons?
You can be picked up from home, school, work or anywhere that is in reasonable distance to the Instructor.

Sometimes, particularly when preparing for a test, meeting at a VicRoads Test Office is really helpful.

How do I pay ?
Payment can be made either Online at the time of Booking, Bank Transfer (prior to lesson), EFTPOS in car or Cash. Note: Online and EFTPOS payments incur a 1.9% transaction fee.

I see you offer different lesson lengths, which one should I choose?
Chose a length to suit your needs.

  • 60min is great for just starting out, test preparation or refresher lessons local to the learner.

  • 90min are great to get different roads ( built up areas and country drives ). Also, at the end of 60min the learner is just getting into it and the extra 30min allows is valuable to put what was learnt into practice.

  • 120min is great for longer drives to test areas, freeways, challenging intersections and country driving. As most of the Help U 2 Drive learners are rural its a great experience to head to busier locations.

What would I expect to do on a lesson?
Lessons are catered to the individual learners needs and capabilities.
Eg: A Test preparation lesson would include multiple 'Reverse Parallel Parking', '3 point turns' and a 'mock test' giving the learner a test experience without the Nerves!
While in the safety of a Dual Control car we can tackle some large intersections and more challenging tasks that the learner may not usually want to try. Every lesson covers road rules, vehicle control techniques, observation, driving behaviors, road markings and signs and heaps of other valuable stuff!

Can a Parent/Supervisor sit in on a lesson?
Definitely! I encourage Parents and Supervisors to sit in on a lesson to see how their learner is progressing.

General Learners Questions

General Learners Questions -

Should I use the Paper Logbook of the mylearners app?
This is entirely up to the learner and their main supervisor as they are both involved in the process of monitoring the learners practice hours.

Below is a list of Pro's and Con's for both logbook and App -
    Logbook PRO's -

  • It doesn't matter if you phone is flat or you're out of data, the drive can still be entered.

  • The App. can 'crash' on occasion.

   Logbook CON's -

  • Every practice session needs to be manually entered with a risk of error with either adding up hours, mistakes, improper signatures.

  • If you lose the book the record of your hours has gone. Some learners will photograph each completed page but this method still requires re-entering the data.

  • The VicRoads testers can reject some of the entries if they believe they are not correct or mistakes have been made (eg: entered night hours not in daylight hours, missing or incorrect signatures, calculation errors, etc...)

   App. PRO's -

  • Calculates day and night hours easily.

  • Simple and easy for Parent/supervisors to approve their learners drives.

  • Can't lose any lessons as the data is linked to your VicRoads account.

  • Supervisors can manually add up to 10hrs of drive practice when there is no access to the app.

  • Once the hours have been submitted and declared VicRoads can't reject them like the Logbook

   App. CON's -

  • The App. can 'crash' on occasion.

  • Flat phone battery or data will not allow you to use the app.

With a STOP Sign Do I need to wait for 3 seconds ?
No. A STOP is when you bring the car to a complete Stop (this is when the wheels have stopped moving completely)

In the Test an 'Immediate termination' (Instant Fail) is recorded if you fail to Stop at a STOP Sign (By treating the intersection as a GIVE WAY and don't make any real effort to stop the car)
A 'Critical Error' is recorded if an effort is made but fail to bring the car to a complete Stop.
